Our Father,
who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come,
thy will be doneon earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
The Our Father (also called the Lord's Prayer) is the perfect prayer Jesus taught us in the Gospels. It is short, complete, and powerful, covering praise for God, our needs, forgiveness, and protection from evil. It teaches us to pray simply, with trust in God as our loving Father, and to pray together as a family or community. Here's a plain breakdown of each line, using the words from Matthew's Gospel:
"Our Father, who art in heaven"
God is like a good parent who loves and cares for us all.
We say "our" Father (not just "my") to pray as brothers and sisters in God's family, including everyone.
"Who art in heaven" reminds us God is above all creation, powerful and holy—not limited to earth. It lifts our hearts up to Him.
"Father" teaches faith (God cares), hope (He gives good things), love (imitate Him), humility (honor Him), and care for others.
"Hallowed be thy name"
Hallowed means "made holy" or respected.
We ask God to help everyone honor His name through our good lives, like living purely so others see His goodness.
"Thy kingdom come"
We pray for God's rule of love, justice, and peace to grow in our hearts, families, and the world—like heaven on earth.
It means asking the Holy Spirit to change us and defeat sin.
"Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven"
In heaven, everyone perfectly obeys God without sin.
We ask for strength to follow God's loving plan in our daily choices, no matter what.
"Give us this day our daily bread"
Daily bread means food, home, and everything we need to live—but also spiritual food like Jesus in the Eucharist.
Pray it each day with trust: God provides just enough, like a father feeds his children.
"Forgive us our debts (trespasses), as we forgive our debtors (those who trespass against us)"
Debts are our sins against God.
God forgives if we forgive others—no grudges. It's a two-way promise: be merciful to receive mercy.
"Lead us not into temptation"
Temptation is a test or pull toward sin.
Ask God to guide us away from situations where we might fail, keeping our hearts pure.
"But deliver us from evil"
Protect us from the devil, sin, and all harm.
This sums up the whole prayer: with God's help, we're safe from life's dangers.
Some versions add: "For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever," praising God's total control.
"Amen"
Means "so be it" or "truly"—we end with strong faith that God hears and answers.
This prayer is brief (easy for all to learn), perfect (includes everything good to ask), and effective (Jesus, our best teacher, gave it). Pray it daily—at meals, bedtime, or as a family—to grow closer to God and live His will.
Living Out the “Lord’s Prayer—Our Father” in the Domestic Church
The Our Father, taught by Jesus Himself, is the perfect family prayer that draws your home into the heart of the Church. As the domestic church—your family united by sacraments like marriage and Baptism—you live it out through simple daily habits: praying it together morning and evening, at meals, and in tough moments. It builds unity, teaches kids faith, and turns everyday life into dialogue with God. Break it down petition by petition with practical steps.
1. "Our Father, who art in heaven" – Recognize God as Loving Dad
Pray it first thing: Gather in your icon corner (a shelf with crosses, icons, Bible) for morning prayer. Say it together to start the day knowing God is your family's Father, making you brothers and sisters.
Family chat: At breakfast, share one way God cared for you yesterday—like a safe trip home. This echoes "Our," embracing everyone, even extended family or neighbors.
Nightly wrap-up: End evenings repeating it, thanking God as Father who watches over your sleep.
2. "Hallowed be Thy name" – Honor God in Your Home
Bless the space: Before meals, trace the cross on food and say a quick "Blessed be God." Teach kids His name is holy by speaking kindly—no swearing or gossip.
Daily respect: When tensions rise, pause and pray this line to refocus on God's holiness, avoiding fights.
Family icons: Light a candle weekly by icons, praying it to make your home a "domestic sanctuary."
3. "Thy kingdom come" – Bring God's Rule into Family Life
Share the Good News: Read a short Bible verse (like from Sunday Mass) after dinner, discussing how to live it—like helping a neighbor.
Acts of mercy: Plan one family kindness weekly, e.g., visit grandma or donate toys. This builds God's kingdom at home.
Pray for the world: Add intentions for peace or sick family, linking your home to the Church.
4. "Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven" – Follow God's Plan Daily
Big decisions: Before choices like jobs or school, pray it together, asking "What does God want?"
Obey in small things: At bedtime, review the day: "Did we do God's will, like sharing toys?" Kids learn obedience through parents' example.
Liturgical year: Mark feasts at home—Advent wreaths or Lent sacrifices—to align family rhythm with heaven.
5. "Give us this day our daily bread" – Thank God for Needs
Meal prayers: Always pray before/after eating: "We thank You, Christ our God..." Use it to notice God's gifts—food, health, love.
Share simply: Discuss needs around the table, trusting God like kids trust parents. Avoid waste; help the hungry.
Eucharist link: Prepare for Sunday Mass by praying it, seeing Jesus as true Bread.
6. "Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us" – Practice Mercy
Quick sorrys: When kids fight or spouses snap, stop, hold hands, pray this line, then hug and forgive. It heals quarrels fast.
Family forgiveness ritual: Friday evenings, share one "I'm sorry" and forgive, like Jesus taught.
No grudges: Teach: God forgives if you do. This prevents divorce, builds peace.
7. "Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil" – Guard Each Other
Evening examen: Pray it at night, naming temptations (screens, anger) and asking protection.
Support system: If someone's struggling (e.g., bad habits), pray for them daily as a team.
Safety net: Before outings, pray it for safe travels, shielding from evil.
Simple Daily Routine to Start
Morning (5 mins): Icon corner, full Our Father, one intention.
Meals: Grace with thanks.
Evening (10 mins): Our Father, examen, forgiveness.
Weekly: Rosary or Bible share—top family prayer after Our Father.
Your home becomes a school of prayer where kids learn perseverance and love. It overflows to society, making the world kinder. Keep it basic: consistency over perfection. God promises His presence where two or three gather.
